Study Abroad Considering going abroad? I'm going abroad! What do I do now?
Should I go abroad? Majoring in International Studies and studying abroad are a natural combination! While study abroad is not a requirement for the major, we strongly encourage all IS majors to pursue a significant international experience during the course of their undergraduate career. Whether through a study abroad program or an internship, the experience of studying or working in a foreign culture is invaluable and will probably be the best thing you can do for yourself. So....DO IT! The IS Program accepts up to 20 credits from abroad into the Major. Students need to follow some basic guidelines and work closely with an IS Advisor through this process. All in all, it's not too complicated. Read these articles about the benefits of going abroad:
Can I afford to go abroad? We encounter many students who assume that study abroad is too expensive, but when we probe whether these students researched actual program costs and the possibilities to get help financing study abroad, almost all say...no! Don't be one of those students! Do your research! Don't assume it's out of your budget until you crunch those numbers. You may be missing out on a opportunity of a lifetime. Scholarships, grants, and loans may be need-based as well as merit-based. Check it out: a recent IS major applied for a number of scholarships and grants, and he received more money than he needed! With a little effort, that could be you! UW Resources for study abroad:
